General Family Practice

Naturopathic medicine has something to offer every health concern from birth throughout our entire lives. Diet and lifestyle changes are actually more successfully established in a family environment of others with similar goals. Many problems such as upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, stomach aches, vaginitis can be treated and prevented from recurring with natural remedies.

Women’s Medicine

Naturopathic doctors were among the first to warn (many years ago now) what the Women’s Hormone Study found out a few summers ago. Premarin (from pregnant mares’ urine) and Provera (synthetic progesterone) were not only failing to protect all women from cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, they were increasing their risks! Hormone related issues such as PMS, menopause, mood and sleep changes can very successfully be treated with nutrition, herbal preparations and supplements. Dr. Beaty has been working in women’s health for thirty years and has done many annual exams. Presently, she refers her patients to an MD or Nurse Practitioner for Paps and breast exams.

Nutritional and Lifestyle Education and Support

Many people are confused by all they hear and read about how and what we should eat and supplements we should take. Assessment and discussion of your unique life, health concerns and risks results in a plan that will ultimately decrease those symptoms and risks. Support is given for changes in meal planning, shopping (reading labels, trying new foods, stores) and in cooking (recipes, books, delis/restaurants).

Lifestyle change has to be implemented in the way a person can. Every effort is made to tailor fit each program. To make it “do-able”. Schedule and family challenges are discussed.

Physical fitness is encouraged and practical solutions suggested to overcome the obstacles to developing a healthier lifestyle.

Detoxification Programs

The roots of Naturopathic medicine are the sanitariums of Europe. It was observed at the time that many of the ill people who moved from toxic places (squalid cities then) into clean air and were fed a diet of fresh foods and clean water, combined with prescribed amounts of rest, outdoor exercise, herbs, homeopathic remedies and water treatments (hydrotherapy) recovered their health whereas those who stayed in the unsanitary cities often did not even survive. Modern Naturopathic Doctors are aware that our world is no less toxic than theirs. Present pollution is just from a different type of source. Because most of our current toxins are oil-soluble (harder to detoxify than water-soluble), they are filtered by the liver and excess is readily stored in any fatty tissue including the brain.

A Cleansing Program (from 1 day/wk to 3 wks/2x yr) carefully tailored to your life is designed to help your body lower the accumulation in the tissues. It results in a rewarding sense of renewal and increased energy.

Health Assessment Screening

Naturopathic medicine’s focus on finding the cause (tolle causum) leads us to explore health assessment in ways that can be different from conventional MDs. Sometimes it involves looking for the cause in a different way and sometimes it involves interpreting the same information differently. Certainly not all cases require testing.

Specialty tests that might be recommended from one of a number of specialty laboratories (that are not likely to be covered by your insurance), could include:

Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory’s (www.gsdl.com) tests such as:

  • Adrenocortex Stress Profile (cortisol, DHEA)
  • Bone Resorption Assessment (osteoporosis risk)
  • Comprehensive Cardiovascular Assessment (heart attack, stroke risk)
  • Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis and Parasitology  (gastrointestinal problems)
  • Intestinal Permeability Assessment (leaky gut)
  • Standard Detoxification Profile (liver’s ability to handle toxic load)
  • Elemental Hair Analysis (heavy metal toxicity)
  • Female Hormone Profile (pms)
  • Women’s Hormone Health Assessment (menopause)

Alletess’:

  • Candida Profile
  • Intestinal Flora Immunity Panel
  • ELISA Food and Inhalant Allergy Tests

NeuroScienceInc’s Profiles which are helpful with the aspect of mood imbalances (anxiety, depression, insomnia, emotional overeating, and lethargy) that are related to brain chemistry levels such as serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, cortisol and DHEA.

It might be suggested that you request that your MD (so that it would be covered by your insurance) test, for example:

  • Fasting Glucose and Insulin
  • Thyroid tests (TSH, freeT4, freeT3, thyroid antibodies)
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC – White & Red blood cells – infection, allergy, anemia)
  • Fasting Lipid Profile (Cholesterol, HDLs, Triglycerides, etc with Homocysteine & C-reactive Protein if you can get them)
  • Liver Enzymes
  • Lyme Test
  • Pap smear, Mammogram, Bone Density
  • PSA

Some tests you might be taught to do at home.

Physical Exams

Dr. Beaty does basic physical examination as needed related to a patient’s complaints, such as skin, heart, lung, abdominal, neurological, musculoskeletal, nutritional, eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Herbal and Homeopathic Custom Formulations and Creams

As we observe in other aspects of nature, plants (which are the source of herbal and homeopathic remedies) often work best in synergistic combination with other plants. Trained Herbalists, such as Naturopathic Doctors, focus on how the particular chemistry of a plant may have a unique contribution to the biochemistry of an illness. Dr. Beaty has been custom formulating remedies for specific situations for 25 years or more.

Eclectic Style Massage

Dr. Beaty was originally trained in massage in California in the 70’s. A lifetime of giving and receiving Massage Therapy has allowed her to develop a style that is uniquely her own. Moist heat applications augment the techniques she has adapted.

Counseling

Dr. Beaty’s undergraduate minor was Psychology, Master’s was in Education and Naturopathic Doctors receive far more extensive training in counseling than MDs. It is an integral part of a family practice. As health care providers, sometimes the best thing we can do is listen.

Group Speaking

Dr. Beaty would be happy to speak on any health topic to any group and has done so for many years.
